My Health Story

As a child I had asthma, eczema, allergies, IBS and was prescribed endless steroids and medications, sent to specialists but nothing ever truly helped. I grew out of it all over a time but after having children a lot of the symptoms started to rear their heads again. I hopped back onto the same merry-go round of creams and specialists but nothing was working. Luckily by that time I was studying Functional Medicine and chose to look at the symptoms through that lens. I found over the years that I had the MTHFR gene, COMT snips, Gilberts Syndrome, Heavy Metals from Mercury Amalgams and SIBO and as I treated each of those and my symptoms resolved. I became passionate about helping people find the root cause of their disease, bringing the body into homeostasis and rejuvenating wellbeing.

My Journey to Functional Medicine

I worked in mainstream health services for the first 15 years of my career. But something aways felt off… it wasn’t long before I began to question many of the standard practices, which seemed to be just band-aiding symptoms and fixing numbers on a page, while the patients overall health continued to deteriorate and they’d collected new diagnoses one after the other. For example: Poor energy and weight gain is often linked to an underactive thyroid, so a persons thyroid function would be tested and if indicated, patient would be diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, prescribed thyroid replacements and sent out the door (before soon returning with more health issues). That question kept rearing it head... But Why??? I wanted to know why the thyroid was underactive? And what else that was causing? And can we fix the problem rather than just replacing its function with a pill? After much of my own research, I found Integrative Health & Functional Medicine and it turned out that the answer was Yes! There is a reason for thyroid function deterioration and no, it is not a co-incidence that many people quickly after this diagnosis, get diagnosed with high Cholesterol and prescribed another pill, then Insulin Resistance and Impaired Fasting Glucose... and more pills. And yes, this could all be prevented, as is the situation for many common health conditions. Nor was it a co-incidence that so many people with Anxiety and Depression had Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Or that people with Eczema were lactose intolerant. The list just went on and on and I found that so many conditions could be healed naturally without prescription medications and all their side effects! So I commenced training with The Kresser Institute of Functional & Evolutionary Medicine and then completed my fellowship with The Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine and have never looked back.
