Lyme disease Testing

Chronic Lyme disease is becoming more widespread in Perth as well as Australia wide.  It is a stealth infection mostly transmitted by ticks and other vectors, however many sufferers do not recall ever being bitten by a tick.

At our Perth clinic of Advanced Functional Medicine, we specialize in the testing as well as treatment of Lyme disease. Click the link in order to get full guide on Lyme disease in Australia.

Considering the estimate by the Lyme disease association of Australia, over 200,000 people in Australia are suffering from chronic Lyme disease without a diagnosis.

Symptoms of Lyme disease

There are many symptoms that accompany Lyme disease, they should be separated into both acute and chronic categories.  Acute symptoms usually persist in a couple of weeks from suspect infection. However, chronic symptoms develop over a period of time with the progression of the disease and infection.   Symptoms include ;

Acute Lyme disease symptoms

  • Bulls eye rash at bite site
  • Fatigue and lethargy
  • Memory impairment
  • Flu like symptoms
  • Anxiety is mood diruption
  • Tinnitus and blurred vision
  • Various skin rashes

Chronic Lyme Disease symptoms

  • Aches, pains and arthritic symptoms
  • Anxiety
  • Nervous system dysfunction
  • Brain fog
  • Numbness and tingling of limbs and face
  • Chronic fatigue and depression
  • Chest tightness and palpitations
  • Skin rashes
  • Migrating joint pain
  • Gut issues and increased food intolerance
  • Paralysis of the face

Treatment of Lyme disease

The treatment greatly depends on the stage of a patient.  Chronic Lyme will be treated differently to acute Lyme infections.  Chronic Lyme patients will more than likely have many other health issues that need addressing at the same time, these include gut issues, methylation imbalances, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and impaired detoxification.

Antibiotics are effective initially in acute cases of Lyme disease, however, effective in shorter-term applications only.  Long term use of antibiotics damages the body and further cause the Lyme spirochete to change form to evade treatment.  Ongoing treatment of chronic Lyme is furthermore achievable with antimicrobial and immune-boosting herbs in conjunction with high dose vitamins and minerals.

What is tested and how much does Lyme disease testing cost?

We use a combined testing panel that measures the following markers and antibodies;

Borrelia Specific Antibodies: Borrelia burgdorferi IgG & IgM, OspA + OspC peptides IgG & IgM, OspE peptide IgG & IgM, Leukocyte Function Associated antigen IgG & IgM, Immunodominant protein IgG & IgM, Variable Major protein IgG & IgM;

Borrelia sub-species Antibodies: Borrelia b. sensu stricto IgG & IgM, Borrelia garinii IgG & IgM, Borrelia afzelli IgG & IgM;

Lyme co-infection Antibodies: Babesia IgG & IgM, Ehrlichia IgG & IgM, Bartonella IgG & IgM
Borrelia burgdorferi IgG & IgM (tested by Western Blot)

The testing we provide uses blood testing that incorporates ELISA, immunoblot as well as the traditional western blot test methods too.  We send the sample directly to the USA specialist laboratories for the purpose of examination.  We find that this testing method has been most effective in diagnosing patients.

The price for the Lyme panel $1020 + $20 postage.  There are cheaper options available that just test for the Borrelia burgdorferi strain but are by no means as comprehensive, much of the symptoms produced can come from the co-infections.  The price to test this one strain is $220 using ELISA technology whereas $265 using the western blot method.
